But not so Paddington. This movie has everything you need for a great family trip this Christmas. The film is funny and charming, with the appeal of other Brit films such as Love Actually. The Brown family remind me of the Banks family from Mary Poppins - Mum is imaginative, creative and can't bear not to help Paddington, while Mr Brown, a risk assessor, is dull, set in his ways and ready to quash any free thought or rash actions.
And just as the Banks family need Mary Poppins, it turns out that the Browns need Paddington.
Throw in a dastardly plot to have him stuffed and there's something for everyone. Jokes, thrills, intrigue and some surprisingly poignant moments. Oh, and a back story that explains how Paddington came to be in England. Something I had never really cottoned on to before.
Our eight-year-old reviewer absolutely loved the film and is already planning another trip to the cinema to see it with friends before Christmas - he even wanted to put it on his wish list for Santa until it was pointed out that it wouldn't be on DVD by Christmas!
If you're looking for a film for the whole family to watch this festive season, Paddington is the one.
Paddington is released on 28 November 2014. Catch the trailer here.
